New faces and good turnouts for the last several practices. Last Friday was the thinest we have had with 4 on 5. But, it turned out great with lots of drops and good passing. We hope to see everyone on wednesday.
A couple of new swimmers were asking about “the curl”. This is a defensive move to protect the puck. The video shows a inside the lip curl, where the puck is held on the inside of the lip of the stick not the outside. The advantage is the puck is protected by the stick and if the defender has shorter arms it keeps it further out of reach (I have very long arms so this can work well against a shorter defender). The disadvantage is if you have an opponent behind you this makes easier for them to back pick you. The other way to curl is to keep it on the front lip of the stick (and this is the preferred way to do a curl). The advantages to this are you can keep the puck tight to the body and you can flick to a team mate at any point in the curl. Notice the legs are not doing the typical flutter or dolphin kick, I am kicking like I am peddling a bicycle. I am also keeping low to the pool bottom so a defender can’t reach underneath. Always try to swim out of a curl.
Look who got “Ducked” at Lucky’s Lake Swim. A nice place to swim on those days you can’t play underwater hockey.
For anyone interested I will be doing an UWH workout Tuesday 8/27/13 at my house 5pm. Think of this as a warm-up for Wednesday’s practice. A good opportunity to work on some skills.
Join me for practice at my house this Tuesday.
I am teaching duck to play UWH. He has learned to play holding the stick in his mouth, but constantly complains when I give him the white stick. He says he wants to play on the black side, what the “duck”.
We had a great turnout today with 15 players (5 of them were newbies). Everyone had great fun. We hope everyone will show up again on Friday it should be an excellent practice. Next wednesday FOX 35 will be filming so make sure you plan on playing next week.
Red sticks had their game on! Lots of red and yellow sticks tonight . It’s good to have new folks give it a try.
Our next generation of UWH players? We poached from the Gladiator water polo team. Danny, Anthony and Maximus. All are age 12.
Mel Nash, think how good he would be if he used a mask and snorkel!
Not as much fun as playing underwater hockey, but close. Lucky uses jetpack for hunting underwater zombies video. SEE THE VIDEO You can play underwater hockey with a jetpack but it it very hard to curl.
We had a great practice Wednesday evening. We were very happy to have Tim from theWest Palm Beach team join us.
There is a big swim meet Friday evening (June 28th) at the aquatic center. We will be playing in the teaching pool at the regular time. Because this is a shallow pool this is a great opportunity to bring some newbees to join us.
Lucky would like to invite everyone to his 4th of July party. For those that are interested in pushing the puck prior to the party we will play at 4PM the party starts at 5PM so once folks start arriving the pool will be too crowded to play anymore (be prepared to play some serious water volleyball). Bring something to throw on the grill and a side dish to share (friends and family are welcome).
Midnight Swim Patch
July 3rd is Lucky’s “Famous” Midnight swim. Show up at 10PM to watch the movie (Bait) and then we will swim at midnight. You must watch the movie and do the swim to get the very cool patch.
Our team is hosting the ACCs the 13th and 14th of next month. Make sure you contact Samantha Huss if you are planning on playing and or volunteering by wednesday April 3rd. Also remember you must register with USA underwater hockey to participate online membership here.

Orlando Family Magazine is doing an article on our UWH club. We are doing a photo shoot of the team for the article on Wednesday. If you have played with us or are considering playing with us come on over. Please be at the YMCA Aquatic Center by 7:00PM. We will be playing, but will take photos before practice. We especially need any parent child combinations to show up!
Come this wednesday for a team photo shoot.
